District Institute of Education (DIET) is an Institution aimed at providing Elementary Teacher Education course, set in a rural village of Munanjipatti, with an area of 25 acres, donated by the local Pannaiyar Mr. Reddiyar for the conduct of Basic Training School to the Government of Tamilnadu. DIET was established in the year 01.02.1990 as per GO No: 1828 (Edn.) Dated 30.12.1989. The quality and efficiency of education, to a large extent, depend upon the quality of teachers. Teachers are keys to optimum development of human resources. A systematic teacher education programme, both pre-service and in-service is essential for qualitative improvement in education. In view of this scenario it is essential to design effective teacher education programme to motivate and acquire various skills. There are seven branches in the DIET each performing their own work as designed by SCERT, the Head Organisation of this Institution.

To provide academic and resource support to the Elementary, Adult & Non Formal Educational sectors for the continuous quality improvement in Education.
The Mission of DIET is “to provide academic and resource support at the grass-roots level for the success of the various strategies and programmes being undertaken in the areas of elementary and adult education with special reference to the universalisation of primary and elementary education”. DIETs have three main functions
1. Training – all types
2. Resource support (extension/guidance, development of materials, aids, evaluation tools, modules, text books writing, etc.,)
3. Research projects and action researches.
Some of the implications of this would be as follows:
- All the programmes will be need-based.
- Good work done by trainees will be duly recognized, encouraged, displayed and publicized.
- Maximum possible use will be made of the local environment in the learning process.
